Angel Says: Accolades if not Chocolates to 'Met Ys'
By Andries Botha

Accolades to the creative guys behind the Checkers ad - "don't change your lifestyle, change your supermarket". They followed that up with a "thank you" to the 800 000 plus customers who have swung to Checkers. Among the reasons mentioned for the swing are the aged steaks on their shelves and their "wine route". I have done a check on value for money at the wine department and I think other supermarkets have some running to do to catch up.

Then there are two ads that people never seem to get tired of, no matter how many times they have to look at it:
"Met ys, ja, met ys". (The ice obviously goes into tea cups filled with Klipdrif brandy.) And rounding it off with: "Nog enetjie?"

"And remember, I"m watching you..." has already become part and parcel of South African folklore.

Both these ads are professionally done.

And as Winston Churchill once remarked: "A good joke can stand the test of retelling."

The test of a good ad is the effectiveness of its punch line. Does one have to elaborate on this one to know what it's all about: "It's the peanuts, they're complimentary"? It's almost worth awarding a prize to anybody who don't recognize this and can't put two and two together.
