For the Love of Food
27 Jul 2010

“Food for Thought” was held on 22 and 24 June 2010 in collaboration with The 7th Floor, Foodcorp’s food design and innovation center. The workshop introduced scholars, and interested parents, to the wonderful world of food. They were taught that, with the right approach, healthy food can be very delicious. “Superfoods” were introduced to the workshop participants and they were also shown how to read food labels and prepare healthy snacks. It was great fun first watching a cooking demonstration before attempting to make these dishes from scratch.

The wonders and versatility of chocolate was introduced to workshop participants in the afternoon. Here they discovered the secrets of making delicious truffles, mousse and chocolate garnishes for gorgeous food decorating.

But the magic didn’t stop there. Design Indaba and Foodcorp also teamed up to host a cooking workshop for the girls’ soccer team from the Ikamva Youth Soccer Club in Nyanga. This initiative aimed to promote community upliftment while equipping these girls with valuable life skills.

Mafahle Mareletse, group marketing director of Foodcorp, said: “This is great stuff. This could be a life changing experience for some of those kids. Well done.”

Design Indaba’s objective with the various workshops was to encourage young people to explore various opportunities and career paths. Photography, jewellery, leather, ceramic and craft were the other workshops presented by various industry leaders for the young people of Cape Town.
