WHAT'S NEW?
14 Oct 2015

The song All Things Bright and Beautiful came to mind as I looked at the books for this newsletter. For those interested in the fauna and flora found in our rivers and dams, "Freshwater Life: A Field Guide to the Plants and Animals of Southern Africa" is a must. "Burchell's Travels", an attractive hardcover book, documents the life of William John Burchell, an artist and explorer in 1800s of the Cape Colony. His drawings and paintings of animals and landscapes are beautifully reproduced in the book. And also deserving of a mention, "Maverick: Extraordinary Women from South Africa's Past" has the well-known Glenda and her python friend on the cover.

Please join us on Saturday, the 17th of October at 11:00 when Ingrid Winterbach will be discussing her latest work Vlakwater with Chris van der Merwe. The following Thursday evening [18:30], the 22nd of October, Arnon Grunberg joins us as he talks with Lina Spies who translated his Tirza from Dutch to Afrikaans. Please RSVP [021-882 9100 / louise@proteaboekwinkel.com] for the Grunberg function up until Monday the 19th of October, as we would like to organise catering.

Enjoy our Newsletter.

Sincerely yours,

Ingrid Davis

WHAT'S NEW?

Do the words "building" and "renovations" fill you with dread? The constant chaos and layer of dust that covers everything. That is what's going on at our home at the moment. But, as the saying goes, you have to break some eggs to make an omelette. Pity that renovating doesn't cost the same as a dozen eggs... Enough about my dramas; on with the newsletter:

There sure are some big names in this edition: Mario Vargas Llosa, Milan Kundera and Haruki Murakami. All lovely hardcover books. Have a look below in the fiction section.

Another book that stood out for me was "Mega Structures and Master Minds: Great Feats of Civil Engineering in Southern Africa" by Tony Murray. Its not every day that we have a book on engineering in the newsletter.

Saturday, the 12th of September, please join us as Saskia Goldschmidt discusses her novel, Die Hormoonfabriek, with Daniel Hugo, who is also the translator of it. The following Saturday the 19th of September will be Die Onbekende Van Gogh's turn. The author Chris Schoeman will be here to discuss his latest oeuvre.
Enjoy our Newsletter.

Sincerely yours,

Ingrid Davis

WHAT'S NEW?
12 Aug 2015

Dear Reader

The start of the second semester came and went smoothly. It still amazes me what a difference six months on campus can do to a first year-ling: from shy and retiring to confident and slightly ..., well, let's leave it at that.

There is a strong thread of sport and history in this newsletter, together with the usual array of fiction. A book that stands out for me is "South Africa's Rugby Legends: The Amateur Years", by Chris Schoeman. Beautifully set and printed by Zebra Press, this is an ideal gift.

Please join us this coming Saturday the 15th of August for a DVD discussion not to be missed: "Die Wonder van 'n Nuwe Taal in Afrika". It is the brainchild of Hennie van der Merwe, the owner of Ulula Production Company, which has released many Afrikaans and South African history DVD's. It promises to be a very interesting discussion!

The following Saturday the 22nd of August, Denise Ackermann discusses her book "Surprised by the Man on the Borrowed Donkey". This book has touched the lives of many people who also struggled with issues of faith. Come along and be prepared to be enriched and revived.

Enjoy our Newsletter.

Sincerely yours,

Ingrid Davis

Steyn se formidabele naslaanwerk "Ons gaan 'n taal maak". Hennie van der Merwe sal oor hierdie merkwaardige projek gesels.

Geniet die res van ons Nuusbrief.

Louis Esterhuizen

WHAT'S NEW?
14 Jul 2015

Dear Readers

I"ve just spent an hour pulling out dead plants and leaves from our pots in the foyer. I then planted R100's worth of violas and whalaa! A quick and cheap facelift. I hope you will be as pleased with it as I am.

Do you remember being bullied as a child? Not fun, is it? Many a parent wish they could protect their children against all the knocks of life, and being bullied is one of them. "Bully-Proof" by Gail Dore is therefore a much needed publication. It also helps that is written in the South African context.

This is but one of the many exciting books in this newsletter. Just a quick mention for "On the Move: A Life", the biography of Oliver Sacks, the inspirational neurologist of "Awakenings".

Our book discussions will continue on the 1st of August: Lien Botha will be discussing her debut novel Wonderboom with Ingrid Winterbach.

Enjoy our Newsletter.

Sincerely yours,

Ingrid Davis
